Common Irrigation Question # 10: Can I install an irrigation system on my own?
When the question of a homeowner installing a sprinkler system on their own comes up, there are many things to keep in mind before deciding to take on a large project like this.
First of all, it’s not as easy as just throwing some sprinkler heads in the ground and calling it good. There should be a design of the system layout before the construction starts. This will eliminate problems with performance and coverage that might arise after the fact. The next important thing to consider is the amount of water, both pressure and volume, that is available for the irrigation system to tap into, as well as the permits that may be needed depending on the local regulations. Keep in mind that there are very specific tools, fittings, and machines that are needed to construct a system successfully, so research and rental fees will add to the cost and process.
When it comes to the components that are available to the consumer, most hardware stores carry a selection of sprinkler system components; though these are not the same components that a professional can get and will not have the same durability. In the end, I wouldn’t say that a do it yourselfer shouldn’t install an irrigation system, but there is a lot of specific knowledge that a professional installer has that can make the process of installing an irrigation system a better choice in the long run.
Until next time,
